Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf, part of the Damen Shipyards Group, has advanced its commitment to maritime sustainability by installing a cutting-edge shore power system, developed in collaboration with Elma Systems. This new system expands the availability of clean, on-shore power to accommodate a broader range of vessels, including offshore, navy, and fishing vessels, which often operate on 60Hz power.
Key Features of the Installation
- Rotary Converter Technology:
Converts 50Hz shore power to the required 60Hz, ensuring compatibility with all vessel types. - Enhanced Capacity:
The system, installed on the yard’s floating dock, provides up to 250kVA of power at 355A. A load-sharing system allows for future scalability by integrating batteries or secondary power sources if higher demand arises. - Environmental Benefits:
- Eliminates the need for diesel-powered generators, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions.
- Contributes to Damen’s goal of being the most sustainable maritime solutions provider.
Strategic and Cost Advantages
- Subsidy Support: The project was partially funded by a 35% temporary subsidy from the Dutch Enterprise Agency (RVO) for sea-going vessels, reducing financial barriers to implementation.
- Cost Efficiency for Clients: With reduced reliance on diesel generators, Damen can offer more competitively priced services.
Collaboration with Elma Systems
Elma Systems played a pivotal role in designing and installing the custom rotary converter. According to Marco Roman of Elma Systems, the collaboration ensured the system met Damen’s unique needs while advancing sustainability across the maritime sector.
