Today June 25th -is the ‘Day of Seafarer’, and the day we want the world to forget about Oil prices, gloomy shipping market and the Brexit of course.

This day is and meant to praise all seafarers worldwide.  Seafaring – one of the world’s oldest profession has underwent a seachange.  Those were the days where seafarers has good time onboard and ashore with long port stays and no ISPS, Ballast water Management, Collision regulations, MARPOL and SOLAS, Vetting and PSC inspections etc.  The present days are quite challenging where the global economy dictates the speed of a ship and thereby the time a seafarer has on board.  These ever changing environment with high stress levels and fatigue strains have been recently brought out and thanks to MLC where some improvements have been made effect considering seafarers on board.

But this is not enough!

Aims of Day

• Engage the shipping industry to tell both seafarers and the non-shipping audience that seafarers are essential to us all – by saying At Sea for All

• Engage seafarers themselves to say that they are proud to serve a wider cause than just their own careers – by saying

• We are At sea for All

• Engage enlightened members of the general public to signal their own appreciation of the importance of seafarers – by saying Seafarers are At Sea for All

Now let us see what the world talks about Seafarers on this day!

The Day of the Seafarer “gives us all a chance to reflect on how much we all rely on seafarers for most of the things we take for granted in our everyday lives,” said IMO Secretary General Kitack Lim.  “Over one million seafarers operate the global fleet yet billions of people depend on them for the essentials and the luxuries of life . . . Outside of shipping, most people don’t know a seafarer – but everyone has cause to thank them.”

UK – Seafarers UK is participating in a seven day UK “Seafarers Awareness Week” intended to highlight recruitment needs and the opportunities for future mariners in Britain’s economy and armed forces.  In the Philippines, the International Seafarer’s Wellness and Assistance Network (ISWAN) is holding a large celebration at a conference center in Manila.  2,000 attendees are expected, and the gathering will include performances and stage shows; lunch for all attendees; prizes and giveaways; and medical professionals providing advice, free health checks, and health information.  IMO Secretary General Kitack Lim will also be present to address the audience.

MANILA – In celebration of the Day of the Seafarer (June 25), Senator Loren Legarda renewed her call for the institutionalization of mechanisms that would provide better protection of the rights and welfare of Filipino sea-based workers.

Legarda stressed the need to implement a strong, consistent legislative agenda for Filipino seafarers to address issues facing the maritime industry at present.

“Various policies to protect the welfare of our seafarers are scattered in numerous existing laws.  This indicates a need for a more comprehensive legislation that will cover all these provisions, while at the same time complying with international maritime standards,” she said.

With this, Legarda is set to re-file the proposed Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers and the bill to establish a National Seafarers Commission in the 17th Congress, to address the specific concerns and needs of our maritime workers.

“We need to establish the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers that would guarantee their right to humane working conditions and just compensation through ensuring that manning and crewing agencies provide adequate information about on-board conditions as well as local and international laws that apply to the Filipino seafarer,” the Senator explained.

And last but not the least.

MFAME completely understands the importance of seafarers and the role they play when it comes to global economy.

No wonder – the team MFAME and the top professionals behind MFAME are all ex-seafarers!
