  • Crews on NOC’s research vessels celebrate Christmas at sea with traditional meals, decorations, and heartfelt connections.
  • Despite being away from loved ones, holiday traditions such as secret Santa, carols, and festive meals bring joy to the crew.
  • Ships like the RRS James Cook and RRS Discovery continue supporting science missions while embracing the holiday spirit.

Celebrating Christmas on the ocean waves is a unique experience for the crews aboard the National Oceanography Centre’s research vessels. Far from family and friends, these sailors keep the festive spirit alive with traditions like Christmas carols, turkey dinners, and even decorating underwater robots. While science missions remain their priority, holiday cheer finds a way to flourish amidst the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, reports NOC.

Festive Spirit Aboard NOC’s Research Vessels

Both the RRS James Cook and RRS Discovery are celebrating Christmas at sea while conducting vital scientific work in the Atlantic Ocean.

Decorations, including Christmas trees, adorn the ships, and festive traditions like Secret Santa and carol singing help the crew bond.

Holiday Traditions on RRS James Cook

Captain John Leask and his crew are marking Christmas in the South Atlantic Ocean during the 31st Atlantic Meridional Transect mission. The ship will serve a full traditional Christmas dinner, with a four-course meal and decorations enhancing the festive ambiance.

Captain Leask recalls previous instances of Secret Santa surprises, showcasing the camaraderie on board.

Celebrations on RRS Discovery

Meanwhile, the RRS Discovery, en route to Lisbon and its next expedition, mirrors these traditions.

The crew enjoys video calls with family and holiday activities like caroling. Captain Antonio Gatti, an advocate for Christmas movies, jokes about watching Frozen to lighten the mood.

Balancing Festivities and Duties

While Christmas Day includes festive meals and relaxation, normal operations resume on Boxing Day.

Chefs and stewards get a lighter workload with a brunch meal, while other crew members ensure the ship runs smoothly.

Heartfelt Messages from the Crew

Both captains extended warm holiday wishes to their families, colleagues, and the wider scientific community, emphasizing the importance of connection even while far from home.
