  • DeepOcean secures its largest-ever contract, an eight-year subsea inspection, maintenance, and repair (IMR) deal with Equinor.
  • The contract aims to set new standards in digitalized, environmentally friendly subsea operations.
  • DeepOcean will charter a newbuild vessel with dual-fuel engines and advanced technology to support this contract, enhancing sustainability and remote operations.

On November 21, 2024, DeepOcean announced the signing of an eight-year subsea IMR contract with Equinor, marking a significant milestone in the company’s history. The contract, which spans from 2027 to 2035, will cover Equinor-operated assets in the Norwegian continental shelf and Europe. This long-term agreement will serve as a foundation for pioneering advancements in subsea services, focusing on efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

Key Elements of the Contract

A Commitment to Sustainability and Digitalization

The new contract emphasizes DeepOcean’s commitment to environmentally friendly operations. It includes a chartered vessel with dual-fuel engines, which can operate on bio-methanol and biodiesel, and is optimized for remote operations.

This vessel is expected to significantly reduce emissions—by up to 90% when using bio-methanol—and promote sustainable subsea IMR practices.

New Build Vessel for Advanced Operations

The contract will see the deployment of a state-of-the-art vessel, the Rem Ocean, which is designed to be both energy-efficient and technologically advanced.

Equipped with features like a 250-tonne electric crane, two electric WROVs, and an Autonomous Inspection Drone (AID), the vessel will enhance DeepOcean’s capabilities in remote subsea inspections and maintenance.

Long-Term Strategic Collaboration

DeepOcean’s relationship with Equinor dates back to 1999, with the two companies having worked together on subsea IMR activities since 2006.

This long-standing collaboration has enabled DeepOcean to establish itself as a market leader in the North Sea, and the new contract will continue to build on that legacy, driving innovation in subsea operations.

Advancing Efficiency and Technology

DeepOcean’s CEO, Øyvind Mikaelsen, expressed pride in securing this contract, calling it a testament to the company’s commitment to high-quality services and innovation.

DeepOcean plans to leverage its engineering expertise, advanced subsea tools, and remote operations technology to deliver world-class IMR services to Equinor.

Focus on Innovation and Environmental Responsibility

Equinor’s commitment to leading offshore energy operations aligns with DeepOcean’s drive for efficiency, sustainability, and technological advancement.

The collaboration will push the boundaries of subsea operations, contributing to both companies’ ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact and enhance operational efficiency.
