The Danish Maritime Fund has reinforced its commitment to advancing the maritime sector by allocating DKK 16 million (approximately US$2.5 million) across 18 diverse initiatives in its second funding round of 2025. This funding is strategically distributed across the Fund’s key focus areas, aiming to foster innovation, sustainability, and a robust future for the Danish maritime industry.
Advancing Maritime Technology
Several projects are receiving crucial funding to enhance technological capabilities and environmental performance in shipping:
- Søens Tech is developing an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). This AUV is specifically designed for monitoring oceans and maritime installations, and it will integrate AI for autonomous and remote operation, enabling more efficient and comprehensive data collection.
- Incremental Maritime has secured backing to create digital tools that automate green fuel selection. These tools aim to assist shipping companies in effectively reducing CO₂ emissions by optimizing their fuel choices.
- The IT University of Copenhagen is undertaking a one-year research project focused on optimizing AI-assisted stowage planning for container ships. The goal is to reduce the time and computing power required for these complex planning tasks, leading to greater efficiency.
- Danish Shipping received funding for a digital route planning tool designed to reduce ships’ impact on marine biodiversity. This tool will provide navigators with environmental data on sensitive marine areas and recommend sustainable behavior patterns during route planning, promoting eco-friendly navigation.
Boosting Maritime Education
The Fund is also investing in human capital and industry collaboration:
- Copenhagen Business School is developing three new HD online courses specifically for seafarers on board ships. These distance learning courses in Maritime Digitalisation, Macroeconomics and International Trade, and Business Economics and Shipping aim to upskill the maritime workforce and make further education more accessible and attractive for seafarers.
- Smart Maritime Network is receiving support to develop its three-day international maritime event in Copenhagen, the Smart Maritime Annual Global Innovation Congress (SMAGIC’25). This congress will serve as a platform for Danish and international stakeholders to share knowledge and collaborate on implementing smart and sustainable shipping systems through innovation, digitalization, and partnerships.
