282

DHL Global Forwarding is helping Lindt & Sprüngli, the Swiss chocolate maker, reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its ocean freight transport as part of their commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Partnership for Emission Reduction

  • GoGreen Plus Service:
    • As of 2024, Lindt & Sprüngli has transitioned to DHL’s GoGreen Plus service for transportation, which supports their science-based climate targets.
    • The partnership aims to reduce emissions through the use of biofuels made from waste and residues, leading to an average 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions at the source.
  • Carbon Footprint Reduction:
    • Within just three months, Lindt & Sprüngli achieved a reduction of 514.86 metric tons of CO2e emissions.
    • The goal for 2024 is a total reduction of around 4,800 tons of CO2 emissions.

Sustainability Approach

  • Biofuels and Certificates:
    • DHL Global Forwarding utilizes waste- and residues-based maritime fuels for ocean shipping.
    • The emissions reductions are tracked and allocated to the shippers through certificates using a “book and claim” approach, enabling Lindt & Sprüngli to offset the carbon emissions associated with their shipments.

Commitment to Science-Based Targets

  • Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi):
    • Both companies have had their climate targets validated by the independent Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), reflecting their commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
  • Global Reach:
    • Lindt & Sprüngli ships its chocolate products globally, including to markets in the United States, Canada, Australia, China, Japan, Brazil, and South Africa, from European countries like Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, and Austria.

Emissions Reduction and Quality Preservation

  • End-to-End Emission Reduction:
    • The GoGreen Plus service ensures a seamless, emission-reduced supply chain for Lindt & Sprüngli’s products.
    • Full Container Load (FCL) shipments are used for the transport of chocolate in 40′ reefer containers, ensuring that the products maintain their high quality during the journey.

This collaboration between DHL Global Forwarding and Lindt & Sprüngli highlights the growing trend of sustainability within the logistics and shipping industries, showing how companies can meet their climate goals through strategic partnerships and innovative solutions.
