DNV and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Partner on Next-Generation LNG Carrier

DNV and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the development and design verification of a next-generation 200,000 cubic meter LNG carrier. The initiative is focused on achieving greater efficiency in vessel operations and ensuring seamless compatibility with terminals worldwide. The signing took place during the Gastech trade fair in Milan, with Vidar Dolonen, Regional Manager for Korea & Japan at DNV, and Mr. Ryu Hongryeul, Chief Technology Officer at HD HHI, representing their respective organizations.

Design Verification and Efficiency Goals

As part of the agreement, DNV will undertake the verification of HD HHI’s optimized LNG carrier design. The vessel is intended to improve fuel efficiency, streamline operations, and strengthen flexibility in handling diverse global terminal requirements, a key advantage over previous designs.

Leadership Perspectives

Ryu Hongryeul, CTO of HD HHI, emphasized the company’s focus on advancing ship design to better meet customer demands. He noted that the optimized 200K LNG carrier highlights HD HHI’s commitment to enhancing vessel performance and global operability through innovation and strategic partnerships.

Vidar Dolonen of DNV reinforced the importance of collaboration in driving innovation within LNG shipping. He stated that by combining HD HHI’s design expertise with DNV’s verification capabilities, the partnership will support advancements in safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Dolonen added that this initiative reflects both companies’ commitment to responsible shipping and the energy transition, aiming to translate the agreement into practical, future-ready solutions for LNG transport.
