  • Cloud-based platform enables global deployment across fleets and training centres.
  • System models verified under DNV-RP-0513 for reliability and safety assurance.
  • Training modules cover complex operations, including ammonia fuel handling.

DNV and HD KSOE have teamed up to launch an exciting new initiative: the HiDTS-OTS (Hyundai Intelligent Digital Twin Ship – Operator Training Solution). This innovative system was recently showcased at Gastech and aims to enhance safety and efficiency in maritime operations, reports DNV.

Cloud-Based Simulation for Realistic Training

The HiDTS-OTS connects through an API to specialised system models housed in the DNV Simulation Trust Centre (STC), which is a secure and scalable cloud environment. This setup allows for realistic, scenario-based training that can be customised to fit specific vessel configurations.

Thanks to the web-based DNV STC platform, this solution is accessible from anywhere in the world and can be easily implemented across various training centres and fleets. Each training module features high-fidelity simulations, ensuring that they are accurate and relevant to the specific operations of each vessel.

Verified Models for Safe Operations

The system models are rigorously verified according to DNV Recommended Practice DNV-RP-0513, which guarantees their reliability for scenarios like control system failures and normal operations. The HiDTS-OTS also facilitates training for complex and potentially risky tasks, such as handling ammonia fuel, promoting the safer adoption of alternative fuels.

Importance of Training

Hongryeul Ryu, Chief Technology Officer of HD HHI, said: “Next-generation eco-friendly vessel solutions can maximise their performance through appropriate operating environments and systematic management, and this requires strong support from crew training. Therefore, the OTS serves as a core component in realising these solutions, playing a critical role in delivering greater value to shipowners while supporting safer and more efficient vessel operations.”

Byoung Hun Kwon, Executive Vice President / Head of the Digital Technology Research Lab of HD KSOE, explained: “The shortage of seafarers in the shipping industry is becoming increasingly critical, and digital twin technology is emerging as a key solution to this challenge. Leveraging the long-standing partnership between HD Hyundai and DNV in ship digital twin technologies, crew training will be advanced into a data-, control-, and experience-driven competency management system equivalent to real vessel operations.”

Vidar Dolonen, Regional Manager for Korea & Japan, DNV Maritime, added: “This collaboration marks a significant step forward in maritime digitalisation and safety. By combining DNV’s simulation assurance expertise with HD Hyundai’s operational knowledge, we are reinforcing the standards that underpin safe and effective training. It reflects our continued focus on helping to prepare the next generation of seafarers for a more complex operational landscape.”
