  • DNV and Navigation Brilliance (Brinav) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on autonomous collaboration.
  • The companies aim to fast-track the development and approval of autonomous and remote-controlled shipping technologies to encourage a safer and more efficient maritime industry.

Classification society DNV and Navigation Brilliance (Brinav) have signed an MoU to fast-track the development and approval of autonomous and remote-controlled shipping technologies.

Deal to enhance situational awareness and automation

This collaboration focuses on integrating autonomy in both newbuilds and existing vessels, addressing both the opportunities and the new safety risks that come with increased vessel connectivity and automation. Brinav is working on obtaining Type Approval for its situational awareness systems, along with autonomous navigation, remote-control, and navigation assistance products.

The development of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) involves the integration of advanced technologies and interdisciplinary expertise, necessitating close cooperation between autonomous navigation system developers and classification societies,” said Jiang HaiYing, CEO of Brinav, highlighting the importance of this collaboration.

DNV will support this process, leveraging their expertise in certifying novel technologies, and will assist Brinav with approvals in new-building projects. Testing will take place around Qingdao’s Nv Island, utilizing DNV’s expertise and Smart Center’s collaborative efforts in digitalization and decarbonization.

We believe that, as a first step, verifying and approving the external situational awareness system is key for this development. An external situational awareness system will need to be as good or better than a human navigator and is one of the most important systems for realising autonomous vessel operation. We very much look forward to this cooperation with Brinav,” explained Jarle Coll Blomhoff, Head of Digital Ship Systems at DNV.
