  • Simulation takes a central role in seafarer training.
  • New terminology for VR, synthetic and mixed reality.
  • Alternative fuels added to the competence requirements.

As vessel systems become increasingly intricate and alternative fuels start to gain traction, simulation is assuming a pivotal role in equipping seafarers and maritime professionals for the realities of their operations, reports DNV.

Integration of VR, Synthetic Environments, and Alternative Fuels

The revised standard introduces new terminology for virtual reality (VR), synthetic environments, and mixed reality, highlighting the growing diversity of simulation formats. It also broadens the competence requirements to include alternative fuels like ammonia, hydrogen, ethanol, and electric/hybrid propulsion systems, ensuring that training programs are not only safe but also ready for the future. Furthermore, the update clarifies the classification pathways for different types of simulators, such as Class A and D, and aligns with ISO 5476, which serves as the international standard for lifesaving appliance training systems.

Geir Dugstad, SVP, Director of Ship Classification & Technical Director at DNV, said: “The wellbeing of seafarers is critical in sustaining resilient and effective vessel operations in a rapidly transforming industry. High-quality and realistic simulation training plays a vital role in preparing crews for the real-world challenges they will face. This revision supports the industry’s efforts to maintain high training standards while embracing change and innovation.”

Simplifying Compliance and Supporting Emerging Technologies

DNV is making life easier for certified training providers by simplifying the annual audit process and cutting down on administrative hassles. They’ve also updated their guidelines to include definitions for cloud-based and VR simulation delivery formats, which opens the door to more flexible and engaging training experiences.

Captain Aksel David Nordholm, Senior Principal Specialist of Simulator Certification at DNV SeaSkill™, stated: “This revision responds to feedback from manufacturers and training providers, and addresses the need for clearer classification and certification pathways. It supports the integration of emerging technologies while maintaining the robustness of the certification framework.”
