Double Trouble! Cook Overboard and Containers Lost

1997

On Nov 30, 2017, a 59-year old Indian cook by name Ashok M. B. fell overboard from the vessel at the container terminal of Opcsa in Puerto de La Luz, Las Palmas.

Man was disposing garbage when he fell overboard. He first hit the pier, then plunged into the water and became unconscious. He was rescued by other crew members, who immediately jumped behind him, within 15 minutes but reports say that he already got into cardiorespiratory arrest situation.

Besides all attempts Ashok passed away. The autopsy will determine the cause of his death.

Later on the journey the ship which was at Las Palmas reportedly lost some containers during cargo operations. The six containers fell onto the León y Castillo quay from the ship and were damaged.

The cook’s death and container crash were, however, unrelated accidents.
