Double Trouble in Kiel Canal

1940

On November 24, a vessel reportedly suffered from engine failure twice when it was transiting through the Kiel Canal.

What happened?

The vessel ‘Scot Leader’ reportedly suffered from rudder engine failure when it was enroute from Riga to the United Kingdom. The vessel suffered rudder failure after she ran into an embankment near the freeway bridge in Rade.

However, she was successful in backing off with her own power and was advised to proceed to the communal port for further survey.

Fails second time:

While she was proceeding to the communal port another mishap happened close to the ferry point Nobiskrug Yard in Rendsburg and the rudder engine failed for a second time, causing the next grounding.

The vessel was successfully refloated and proceeded to the communal port with its own power. The police Brunsbüttel launched an investigation, and the ship was detained until further surveys have been carried out.

The traffic on the Kiel Canal had to be barred due to the accidents for short time between Schacht-Audorf and Schülp.
