  • DP World Antwerp has completed a €230 million expansion to increase terminal capacity by 30%.
  • The project strengthens the Port of Antwerp’s position as a major European logistics hub.
  • Investments focus on automation, digital systems, and low-emission infrastructure.
  • Upgrades will improve rail and barge connectivity across Europe.

DP World Antwerp has completed a major expansion project aimed at strengthening container handling capacity and modernising terminal operations at Antwerp Gateway. The €230 million investment is designed to improve efficiency, sustainability, and intermodal connectivity, supporting growing European trade demand.

Growth of Antwerp Gateway Terminal

Since its launch in 2005, Antwerp Gateway has rapidly expanded its operational scale, growing from handling around 70,000 TEUs to more than 2.4 million TEUs annually.

The terminal has become a benchmark in smart port operations by integrating advanced automation, intermodal logistics solutions, and renewable energy technologies.

Infrastructure and Capacity Upgrades

The €230 million expansion includes:

  • New terminal infrastructure
  • Expanded container yard space
  • Advanced digital management systems

By 2026, the final four of 27 automated stacking crane modules will be operational, enabling higher-density container stacking and improved yard efficiency.

Digital Transformation and System Enhancements

DP World plans to deploy its updated Zodiac terminal operating system in 2028, further improving operational planning, cargo visibility, and terminal efficiency.

These digital enhancements are designed to streamline container flows and optimise decision-making across the terminal.

Strengthening Intermodal Connectivity

A core focus of the expansion is improving barge and rail links, reducing congestion and supporting lower-emission cargo movement across European hinterland networks.

These upgrades are expected to significantly improve trade flow reliability and environmental performance.

Commitment to Sustainability

Sustainability remains central to the terminal’s operations, with:

  • On-site biogas power generation
  • Wind energy supporting terminal equipment
  • Emissions-reduction-focused infrastructure upgrades

These measures aim to reduce the environmental footprint of port operations while maintaining high performance.

Rashid Abdulla, CEO and Managing Director of DP World Europe, stated that the project reinforces the company’s long-term commitment to European trade and logistics development.

Edi Cioran, CEO of DP World Antwerp Gateway, emphasised ongoing investment in safety, digital technologies, and renewable energy to ensure long-term operational leadership.
