DP World Begins Operations At Tartus Port, Marking A Major Step In Syria’s Maritime Recovery

6

DP World has officially started operations at Tartus Port after a formal handover from the Syrian General Authority for Land and Sea Ports, marking a significant milestone in the company’s 30-year concession agreement. With a planned investment of $800 million, this initiative represents one of the largest international investments in Syria’s logistics sector and aims to transform Tartus Port into a modern, efficient, and digitally enabled maritime hub in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Strengthening Port Operations with New Infrastructure and Planning

DP World welcomed the new harbour tug Al Fath into service, enhancing port safety and vessel handling capabilities. The 22-metre tug, equipped with a 50-tonne bollard pull and firefighting systems, will support safer and more reliable ship calls.

The company has begun a comprehensive assessment of Tartus Port’s existing infrastructure, focusing on quays, equipment, warehouses, and yard areas. Early works will include dredging access channels, rehabilitating older equipment, and deploying new specialised assets to meet growing bulk and breakbulk cargo demand.
DP World also plans to introduce its proprietary digital platforms, implement staff training, and streamline processes to improve efficiency and reduce vessel turnaround times to international standards.

Medium-Term Redevelopment for a Modern, High-Capacity Port

Beyond immediate upgrades, DP World will invest in major redevelopment measures designed to expand Tartus Port’s overall capabilities. This includes upgrading infrastructure and superstructure, increasing cargo handling and storage capacity, improving bulk-handling systems, and developing new facilities for both containerised and non-containerised cargo.

These efforts align with Syria’s long-term economic reconstruction goals, positioning Tartus as a strategic logistics hub in the Eastern Mediterranean. The appointment of Fahad Al Banna as CEO of DP World Tartus further strengthens this vision. With extensive experience from Jebel Ali Port, Al Banna brings deep expertise in digital transformation, port operations, and major infrastructure projects.

DP World’s commencement of operations at Tartus Port marks a transformative step for Syria’s maritime sector. Through substantial investment, operational improvements, and long-term redevelopment plans, the port is set to become a high-performing logistics hub that supports regional trade and Syria’s broader economic recovery. With strong leadership and global expertise, Tartus Port is poised for a new era of modernisation and growth.
