  • DP World won the Environmental Initiative Award for its waste reuse at DP World Santos.
  • The Sustainable Innovation Award for its BOXBAY technology at the 2024 SEAL Business Sustainability Awards.
  •  DP World has become Brazil’s leading multipurpose port operator since taking over operations at the Port of Santos in 2013.
  •  The Aterro Zero project at DP World Santos minimizes waste sent to landfills by turning non-recyclable waste into sustainable energy.
  • The system runs in a CO2-neutral way, utilizing solar power and power regeneration when containers are lowered.

DP World Receives Two Awards in 2024

DP World has been honored with two awards at the 2024 SEAL Business Sustainability Awards, recognizing leadership, innovation, and commitment to sustainable business practices. The awards, which celebrate a range of honorees from well-recognized brands to high-growth start-ups and scale-ups, saw DP World win the Environmental Initiative Award. This award was granted to DP World Santos for its innovative reuse of waste material for energy, a practice that helps divert waste from landfill sites.

DP World Recognized for BOXBAY

DP World received further recognition for its innovative BOXBAY system, an automated, safe, and environmentally friendly high-bay storage container system. The SEAL Sustainable Innovation Award acknowledges BOXBAY’s potential to revolutionize container handling, significantly reducing a terminal’s carbon emissions impact.

Waste Management Initiatives

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, DP World Group Chairman and CEO, expressed gratitude for the Environmental Initiatives Award and the Sustainable Innovation Award, highlighting DP World’s commitment to responsible waste management and circular economy principles. Being honored with the SEAL Sustainable Innovation Award for our BOXBAY technology further demonstrates our commitment to transforming container port logistics for improved efficiency and sustainability.

DP World’s Impact at the Port of Santos

Since assuming operations at the Port of Santos in 2013, DP World has emerged as Brazil’s primary multipurpose port operator. The port’s capabilities extend to handling containers, cellulose, grains, and fertilizers, with a capacity exceeding 1.4 million TEUs and over 5 million tonnes of cargo.

In 2022, DP World achieved a significant milestone by becoming the inaugural port terminal in Brazil to minimize landfill waste through its Aterro Zero initiative. This initiative converts all non-recyclable waste generated onsite into sustainable energy for various industrial activities.

Following the implementation of the Aterro Zero project, waste materials such as cellulose, patio sweeping, toilet paper, and organic substances are repurposed as fuel for cement kilns. This transformation process utilizes an energy reuse technology known as CDRU.

DP World’s Innovative Solution: BOXBAY

DP World collaborated with German industrial engineering specialists SMS group to develop BOXBAY, addressing key challenges in container port logistics. This innovative system combines increased efficiency with environmental targets.

BOXBAY was first piloted at Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port and resembles a massive steel structure resembling a bookshelf for containers. Reducing the required yard space by 60% eliminates the unproductive reshuffling moves common in conventional storage systems. Additionally, full automation allows for an increase in quayside trans-shipment speeds of up to 20%.

Moreover, BOXBAY utilizes solar power generated by photovoltaic panels on the roof of the storage system. It also incorporates power regeneration when containers are lowered, enabling it to operate in a CO2-neutral manner.
