DP World Sokhna has marked a major milestone by handling 285,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in the first quarter of 2025 — the highest quarterly throughput in nearly 20 years of operating the port. This 26% increase over projected volumes not only reflects the port’s rising significance in regional trade but also signals the strengthening of Egypt’s role in global logistics and agriculture exports, especially citrus fruits.
Soaring Volume Driven by Cold Chain Exports
A key contributor to the surge in cargo traffic has been the growth of refrigerated container exports, with Egypt cementing its position as a top citrus exporter globally. The port’s state-of-the-art cold chain infrastructure has enabled it to efficiently manage temperature-sensitive goods, meeting stringent international standards. This has made Sokhna Port a vital export gateway for Egypt’s agriculture sector, facilitating timely and safe delivery of perishables to global markets.
Strategic Investment and Infrastructure Development
Since assuming control in 2008, DP World has invested over $1.3 billion in modernising Sokhna Port. These investments have enhanced its capacity to accommodate the world’s largest cargo vessels and improved overall port efficiency. A significant portion of this development includes:
-
Digital infrastructure for real-time cargo management
-
Seamless integration with global trade routes
-
Improved terminal automation and freight forwarding services
-
The upcoming Sokhna Logistics Park, which will further enhance supply chain efficiency
These initiatives position Sokhna Port as a fully integrated logistics hub in Egypt and the surrounding region.
Egypt’s Emerging Role in Global Trade
As part of a broader strategy to expand DP World’s footprint in the region, Sokhna Port is evolving into a one-stop logistics solution that supports both local businesses and international trade flows. Its enhanced capacity and cutting-edge facilities will ensure that Egypt remains competitive in global commerce, especially in the handling of bulk, refrigerated, and containerized cargo.
