DP World reports that it has unveiled a £1bn expansion plan for London Gateway, which will make it Britain’s largest container port within the next five years. This move is a significant boost for international trade and the UK economy.
Increase in Capacity with Two New Berths
As part of the expansion, DP World will add two new shipping berths, bringing the total to six.
These berths will be capable of receiving the world’s largest container ships. It increases the port’s ability to handle containerized trade efficiently.
New Rail Terminal to Handle Increased Trade
In addition to the new berths, the expansion includes a second rail terminal, designed to support the expected growth in container traffic.
This will further enhance supply chain resilience and connectivity for businesses in the UK.
Expanded Quayside with Europe’s Tallest Quay Cranes
By the end of the decade, the full quayside at London Gateway will be able to accommodate six vessels at once, with the tallest quay cranes in Europe.
These cranes, standing as tall as Big Ben, will improve the efficiency of container loading and unloading.
Job Creation and Economic Impact
The project will create 400 new permanent jobs, adding to the 1,200 already employed at London Gateway.
The expansion is part of a broader effort to boost economic regeneration in south Essex and the Thames Estuary region.
DP World’s Long-Term Investment in UK Logistics
This latest development brings DP World’s total investment in London Gateway to over £3bn.
The site, previously a former oil refinery, has been transformed into a major logistics hub since opening in 2013.
Strategic Location and Logistics Park
The expansion further solidifies London Gateway’s position as a key player in UK logistics, complementing Europe’s largest logistics park established by DP World.
The park offers businesses warehousing, distribution, and excellent transport links, with fast-track planning for new facilities.
Commitment to UK’s Trade and Supply Chain Resilience
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, DP World’s Group Chairman, emphasized the importance of London Gateway’s role in enhancing Britain’s trade.
“DP World London Gateway will help make Britain’s trade flow in the future by connecting domestic exporters with global markets and delivering vital supply chain resilience for the whole economy. I am proud of this major investment which underlines DP World’s long-term commitment to the UK.”
Increased Trade Volume and Strategic Importance
Once completed, the expansion will significantly increase the port’s capacity, with planning approval and regulatory steps underway.
London Gateway already handles nearly 2 million TEU annually, and this number is expected to rise considerably.
DP World’s Growing Role in the UK Economy
DP World continues to play a pivotal role in the UK economy, employing 5,500 workers across its logistics services.
In addition to London Gateway, the company operates Southampton’s container terminal and offers bespoke logistics services across multiple sectors.
Global Network Integration and Future Growth
Operating in 78 countries, DP World handles 10 percent of world trade.
Its logistics services, including European transport and forwarding, are being integrated into its global network, offering a seamless experience for global customers.
