On September 27, five persons are reported to be missing after a dredger collided with an oil tanker off the coast of Singapore.
What happened?
The dredger ‘JBB De Rong 19’ reportedly collided with an oil tanker ‘Kartika Segara’ around 1.7 nautical miles from Sisters’ Island off the coast of Singapore. The dredger was transiting in a westbound shipping lane as it was entering Singapore, while the tanker was joining an eastbound lane to depart when they collided.
Out of the 12 crew members onboard the dredger, the collision resulted in missing of five crew members and seven crew members being treated for injuries.
Dredger capsizes:
The impact of the collision resulted in the dredger being partially submerged in the water. A distress was raised was raised after the collision to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) which dispatched an underwater search and rescue to rescue the 12 crew members onboard the dredger.
Injured crew members rescued:
The seven crew members injured during the collision were rescued by the police coast guard and taken to Singapore General Hospital.
Four tugboats, three patrol craft, seven other vessels and a Super Puma helicopter were deployed to support the operations on the dredger, which was moved to near Pulau Senang, a small island south of the main island of the Singapore city-state. The MPA has told ships to look out for the missing crew and to navigate with caution near the collision site.
Shipping lanes around Singapore are among the world’s busiest and its navigational challenges often include a narrow strait. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the collision.
