On June 20, a container ship collided with the largest oceanic dredger in Mozambique and the breached dredger started sinking with the stern to the bottom.
The Mozambique Port and Rail Company (CFM), the National Naval Institute (INAMAR) and the Beira Maritime Administration reportedly teamed up and refloated the dredger, which is 82 metres long and 16 wide and has capacity to store 2500 cubic metres of sediment.
On June 29, the navigation channel to reach the port of Beira has resumed after towing away the breached dredger, “Macúti”, whose engine room was flooded following a collision with a containership. The breached dredger has been towed to safety for carrying out repairs.
The Sofala provincial director of Transport and Communications said that the investigations to determine the real causes of the accident were ongoing, although it must have been caused by poor visibility due to heavy fog along the coast of Beira.
The local media reported that dredging the access channel will now be conducted with the help of two other dredgers, the Aruângua and Alcantara Santos, having 1,000 cu/m capacity each.
