Drewry’s Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI), a measure of average spot container freight rates within the region, declined by 6% in the fortnight ending December 31, 2024, reaching $879 per 40-foot container. This drop suggests a cooling of the intra-Asia container shipping market after a period of higher rates, reports Drewry.
The IACI comprises 18 route-specific indices, each representing a distinct shipping route within the intra-Asia region. These individual indices are then combined to form a weighted average, providing a comprehensive overview of market trends.
The Drewry Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI) saw a slight decline of 6% in the second half of December, closing at $879 per 40ft container. This follows a period of consecutive increases and reflects a cooling of the market after the peak holiday season.
Despite the recent dip, the IACI remains significantly higher than it was during the same period last year, indicating continued strength in intra-Asian trade.
