As of February 13, 2025, Drewry’s World Container Index (WCI) has decreased by 5%, settling at $3,095 per 40-foot container. This marks a significant 70% drop from the pandemic peak of $10,377 recorded in September 2021. Despite this decline, the current index remains 118% higher than the pre-pandemic average of $1,420 in 2019.

The year-to-date (YTD) average of the composite index stands at $3,560 per 40-foot container, which is $680 above the 10-year average of $2,880. It’s important to note that this 10-year average is influenced by the exceptional rates observed during the COVID-19 period from 2020 to 2022.

Spot freight rates

Specific trade routes have experienced notable rate changes:

  • Shanghai to Rotterdam: Rates decreased by 8% ($238), bringing the cost to $2,887 per 40-foot container.
  • Shanghai to Los Angeles: A 7% decline ($325), resulting in a rate of $4,392 per 40-foot container.
  • Shanghai to New York: Rates fell by 5% ($338), now at $5,874 per 40-foot container.
  • Shanghai to Genoa: Experienced a 2% decrease, with rates now at $4,163 per 40-foot container.
  • Los Angeles to Shanghai: A slight decline of 1%, bringing the rate to $703 per 40-foot container.

Meanwhile, rates for the routes between Rotterdam and Shanghai, New York and Rotterdam, and Rotterdam and New York have remained stable during this period.

These fluctuations highlight the ongoing adjustments in global trade dynamics as the shipping industry continues to stabilize in the post-pandemic era.
