Drifting Ice Breached Barge

2345

On March 1, the cargo ship “Lauwerszee”, suffered an electrical failure due to drifting ice in Meppen. A report in the vessel tracker showed that the ship was moving from Oldenburg to Dorpen, on the Coast Canal near Friesoy, when the incident occurred.

Cause

At 11.15 p.m. the 37 year old Dutch master then remarked, that there was development of suspected smoke which turned out to be steam caused by a massive water ingress in the generator room, in the foreship. This has previously caused short circuits in the ship’s electronic system. He stopped and moored the ship at the canal shore, assisted by the alerted fire rescue and Technical Support Work (THW) which attended with 140 forces. The divers also found a leak underneath the waterline.

Rescue Operation

Initial investigations by the Meppen water police holds the drifting ice responsible for the water ingress.

As the salvage operations began, the coastal canal and the parallel Federal Highway 401 was closed to traffic until the situation gets under control.  The ship was loaded with 550 tons feed pallets and proceeded to the C-Port in Saterland near Sedelsberg after the situation was under control.

In the run of March 2, the whole cargo was unloaded there.
