On February 28, a container vessel was damaged after it was hit by an oil rig after it broke away from its mooring due to strong winds.
What happened?
The container ship ‘Spica’ was damaged when it was hit by an oil rig ‘West Taurus’ in the port Tenerife. The oil rig broke away from its mooring due to strong winds caused by the storm Emma.
Oil platform runs adrift
The oil platform which was moored in the Eastern Basin went adrift after a bollard broke out and breached the container ship which was berthed at the TCT Terminal de Contenedores de Tenerife.
The container vessel suffered severe water ingress and raised the water level by three metres inside the cargo hold of the ship.
Container ship damaged
Seven bilge pumps were supplied from the ships of Salvamento Maritimó, the Civil Guard, the fire brigade and the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Divers from the Servicios Marinos del Atlántico welded the breach which had a length of about 0.4 meters in the hull of the ship underneath the waterline which was patched, thus stabilizing the situation.
Oil rig moored
The oil rig was successfully moored at the TCT Terminal de Contenedores and oil spill was reported.
