Dryad: Maritime Risk Intensifies Amid Red Sea and Black Sea Flashpoints

18

As maritime operators continue to navigate volatile global conditions, the latest intelligence from Dryad Global reveals a critical escalation in threat levels across two strategic regions: the Red Sea and the Black Sea.

Both theatres highlight the growing complexity of maritime risk, driven by geopolitical instability, militant aggression, and heightened military posturing.

Red Sea: Fatalities and Hostage-Taking Mark New Phase in Houthi Campaign

In the most significant escalation in over a year, Houthi militants have launched fatal and highly coordinated attacks against commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

On 7–9 July 2025, the MV MAGIC SEAS and MV ETERNITY C, both Liberian-flagged and Greek-operated bulk carriers, were struck by drones, missiles, and small arms fire.

The ETERNITY C sank after multiple assaults using unmanned surface vessels and rocket-propelled grenades. Out of 25 personnel onboard, four are confirmed dead, ten rescued, and eleven remain missing, with six believed to be held hostage by the Houthis.

The attack on the MAGIC SEAS similarly forced the crew to abandon ship — all were rescued, but the incident reinforces the growing indiscriminate nature of these attacks.

A third incident on 14 July saw the Comoros-flagged tanker OASIS approached by an unmanned skiff east of Bab el-Mandeb. The vessel evaded the threat due to rapid mobilisation by its onboard armed security team.

These attacks confirm a dangerous operational pattern: a willingness to target any vessel, regardless of flag, with escalating lethality,” said a Dryad analyst. “This marks a shift from harassment to full-spectrum assault.”

The maritime risk level in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden remains critical, and Dryad Global advises avoiding transit where possible. Beyond the immediate danger to crew and assets, these incidents risk disrupting key global trade routes and driving up insurance premiums.

Black Sea: NATO Exercises Increase Risk of Military Miscalculation

Meanwhile, the Black Sea remains a theatre of high strategic tension, with NATO and allied forces ramping up maritime and land-based military exercises amid ongoing U.S.-led negotiations with Russia over Ukraine.

Key developments include:

  • Sea Shield 2025 (April), a Romania-led naval exercise with 2,300 personnel from 12 nations.
  • Sea Breeze 25 (July), co-led by the U.S. and Romania, focusing on interoperability and live-fire readiness.
  • Agile Spirit 25, commencing 21 July, will see over 2,800 troops train in Türkiye and Georgia, including a major airborne operation near Adana.

These exercises occur in parallel with heightened geopolitical tensions over Ukraine’s lithium reserves, critical to global tech supply chains. Russia’s seizure of key mineral sites, coupled with new U.S. arms sales to NATO allies, is escalating regional volatility.

The convergence of resource competition and military posturing in the Black Sea amplifies the risk to commercial shipping,” notes Dryad’s regional lead. “Miscommunication or miscalculation between naval forces could have serious consequences.”

Broader Maritime Risk Trends

Dryad’s latest data highlights additional global hotspots:

  • Pirate activity has surged by 50% in 2025 year-on-year.
  • Southeast Asia and West Africa show a relative lull in attacks, but smuggling and organised crime remain active, including cocaine seizures across European and Latin American ports.
  • Cyber risk is on the rise, with Iranian-linked ransomware group Pay2Key resurfacing and promising profit shares to criminal affiliates.
  • Nations including Kuwait, Seychelles, and the Philippines are investing in patrol vessels and drone technologies to boost maritime domain awareness.

Operational Guidance

For maritime operators, the implications of this week’s intelligence brief are clear:

  • Review voyage plans in light of heightened Red Sea and Black Sea risks.
  • Reassess insurance policies and crew protection protocols in high-risk zones.
  • Utilise real-time intelligence and incident monitoring tools to enhance situational awareness.
  • Engage with Dryad Global for bespoke route risk assessments and threat modelling.
