  • Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) signed a contract for three 22m eSAILS® on the MR Tanker newbuild from New Times Shipbuilding, China.
  • The agreement marks EPS’ second agreement with bound4blue in 2024, reinforcing its decarbonization strategy and commitment to reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) has signed an agreement with bound4blue to install three 22-metre eSAIL suction sails on a new MR tanker being built by New Times Shipbuilding in China, reports bound4blue.

The sails, part of a fully autonomous Wind Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS), will be installed in late 2025, marking EPS’s first use of the technology on a newbuild vessel.

eSAILS Installation

This contract is EPS’s second collaboration with bound4blue in 2024, following the retrofit of three eSAILs on the 50,000 DWT Pacific Sentinel earlier this year. The agreement underscores EPS’s strategy to reduce fuel consumption, emissions, and operational costs while advancing compliance with decarbonisation regulations.

Mirtcho Spassov, Decarbonisation Manager at EPS, stated: ‘We’re excited to be working alongside bound4blue and New Times Shipbuilding to install our first wind-assisted propulsion system on a newbuild vessel. This project represents a significant milestone in our decarbonisation journey and lays the foundation for wider adoption of WAPS technology across our fleet.’

The contract with EPS is the latest for bound4blue in 2024, whose orderbook this year has grown from four to fourteen projects.
