  • Edison has completed the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) refuelling operation between a ship and a barge in the port of Trieste.
  • The 30,000-cbm, LNG tanker Ravenna Knutsen transferred fuel to the cruise ship Silver Ray at berth 57 of Molo VII.

Edison has announced it has completed a ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation at the Port of Trieste using the LNG carrier Ravenna Knutsen, reports Marine Insight.

The vessel has been deployed to supply the Ravenna LNG coastal depot since 2021, which is part of Edison’s integrated logistics chain and contributes to the decarbonisation of road and maritime transport.

First LNG bunker delivery

This first LNG bunker delivery will, says Edison, ‘[give] rise to multiple ship-to-ship bunkering operations in the Port of Trieste for the 2024 summer season.’

Fabrizio Mattana, Executive Vice President Gas Assets of Edison, commented: ‘After the start-up of the Ravenna coastal depot, which has become the reference point in Italy for the supply of LNG in road transport, thanks to today’s operation, Edison is the first to position itself in the LNG refuelling market for the maritime segment. It is a sector with a high potential to reduce its emissions and LNG is the solution available and competitive today.’

Mattana also revealed that further LNG bunkering plans are in the pipeline.

To consolidate our market presence, we are also developing a second coastal LNG depot in Southern Italy and a second vessel ready for bunkering,’ he said. ‘So many concrete steps that confirm our commitment to sustainable mobility in Italy and the Mediterranean Sea.’

The Ravenna Knutsen is a small LNG carrier on charter from Norwegian shipowner Knutsen OAS Shipping. Constructed by Hyundai Heavy Industries at the Mipo shipyard in South Korea, the carrier can transport up to 30,000 cubic metres of LNG.
