Egyptian authorities have questioned the crew of a tourist submarine that sank in the Red Sea, claiming the lives of six passengers out of the 45 onboard.
Rescue and Casualties
-
39 passengers and five crew members were successfully rescued.
-
Nine people were injured, with four critically hurt.
-
The passengers included tourists from Russia, India, Norway, and Sweden.
-
The six deceased were all Russian nationals, including two children.
Cause Under Investigation
The cause of the sinking remains unclear. However, Russian tourism officials suggested that the submarine may have hit a reef, leading to pressure loss at a depth of 20 meters (65 feet).
Tourism and Safety Concerns
-
The Red Sea governor confirmed the vessel had a valid license, and its crew leader held the necessary certifications.
-
Witnesses described the submarine as well-maintained, equipped with modern features, and staffed by professional guides.
-
No life jackets were issued, as passengers remained inside the vessel throughout the excursion.
This marks the second maritime incident in the Red Sea in six months. Last November, a tour boat sank near Marsa Alam, leaving 11 people missing or presumed dead.
The frequency of such incidents raises concerns over safety regulations and oversight in Egypt’s popular marine tourism industry. Authorities continue to investigate whether proper safety protocols are being enforced to prevent further tragedies.
