Egypt’s Second Sokhna Container Terminal To Launch By End Of 2025

15

Egypt’s logistics and trade infrastructure is set for a significant upgrade as the Red Sea Container Terminals (RSCT) — a state-of-the-art, fully automated container facility at Sokhna Port — is expected to begin operations by end of 2025. This development will strengthen the country’s position as a strategic global shipping hub along the Red Sea-Suez Canal corridor.

Strategic Location and Powerful Global Partnerships

The RSCT project follows a 30-year concession agreement signed in March 2023 between the Egyptian government and a major international consortium that includes Hutchison Ports, COSCO SHIPPING Ports Limited (CSP), and the CMA CGM Group.

Strategically situated near the southern entrance of the Suez Canal, the terminal is located 150 km from Cairo and just 40 km from the canal, placing it in an ideal position to serve as a key transshipment and gateway hub for global trade routes.

Advanced, Fully Electric Infrastructure for Mega Vessels

RSCT is designed to accommodate ‘Megamax’ class vessels, featuring:

  • A 1,200-meter quay

  • 18.00-meter draft

  • 72-hectare container yard

  • Annual handling capacity of 1.7 million TEU

It will operate with remote-controlled Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes, automated Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes, and electric internal terminal tractors, making it one of Africa’s most sustainable port facilities.

Its launch complements DP World’s adjacent Sokhna Terminal 1, which already handles 2.3 million TEU, making the Sokhna Port complex a critical trade node on the Red Sea.

The upcoming launch of RSCT at Sokhna Port represents a bold step forward in Egypt’s maritime strategy, enhancing both logistics resilience and trade competitiveness. With its cutting-edge green technologies, strategic location, and powerful global partnerships, RSCT is poised to become a regional leader in automated, sustainable port operations.
