Electric Spark Suspect in Ship Fire

On August 14, a cargo ship docked at Bagamoyo caught fire due to an electrical short circuit.

What happened?

A cargo ship belonging to Zanzibar’s Ocean Enterprises reportedly caught fire while it was docked at Bagamoyo, Coast region. The vessel loaded with various cargo including cement was enroute from Bagamoyo to Zanzibar when it suffered an electrical short circuit.

Fire under control

The head of the fire and rescue brigade in Bagamoyo district, Iward Mwanza was alerted about the incident and arrived at the scene within six minutes.

Mr.Mwanza said, “When we arrived, we immediately started extinguishing it but by the time we completed, it has already destroyed some parts of the ship”.

Technical difficulties

The fire is said to have been caused by a technical fault on the ship’s electricity system and a part of the ship was destroyed due to fire. The fifteen crew members onboard the vessel were reported to be safe.

Investigation initiated

The Coast Region Police Commander Jonathan Shanna confirmed the incident and initiated an investigation to determine the events that led to this fire incident.
