Elomatic, an international consulting and engineering company, has completed the successful installation of its patented Elogrid™ tunnel thruster technology on the METEOR IV, a 10,000 GT special purpose research vessel.
Built by MEYER FASSMER Spezialschiffbau for Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the vessel is designed to advance global climate and environmental research within the Atlantic.
Elogrid Technology Integrated in Newbuild Vessel
The METEOR IV marks a milestone for Elomatic’s Elogrid technology, as it is the first time the system has been integrated during a vessel’s initial design phase rather than as a retrofit. Previously, Elogrid solutions were installed on existing vessels to reduce fuel consumption and improve thrust.
For METEOR IV, the key objective was increasing thrust to enhance dynamic positioning capability, essential for the vessel’s demanding research missions. The added benefit of fuel efficiency further strengthens the vessel’s operational sustainability.
Collaboration Driving Innovation in Marine Engineering
The project demonstrates the successful partnership between Elomatic and MEYER FASSMER Spezialschiffbau. According to Jari Yli-Tolppa, Vice President of Shipowner Services at Elomatic, the project sets a blueprint for future newbuilds aiming to improve performance and reduce carbon footprint.
Jan Oskar Henkel, Managing Director at FASSMER, highlighted that the collaboration ensures the METEOR IV meets strict performance requirements, combining advanced thruster technology with efficient vessel operations.
The integration of Elogrid technology into the METEOR IV establishes a new benchmark for marine engineering innovation.
By enhancing thrust, improving dynamic positioning, and contributing to fuel efficiency, the solution not only supports the vessel’s scientific missions but also advances sustainable shipbuilding practices. This achievement strengthens Elomatic’s position as a leader in maritime engineering solutions for both retrofits and newbuild projects.
