  • Eltronic FuelTech and Aarhus University launch the AMAZE project to cut ammonia emissions.
  • Funded by EUDP, the project runs from February 2025 to 2027.
  • A full-scale prototype will reduce emissions below 25ppm.
  • Industry and academia collaborate using lab tests and simulations.

Eltronic FuelTech, in partnership with Aarhus University’s Department of Biological & Chemical Engineering and Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering, is launching the AMAZE project. Supported by the Danish Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP), this initiative focuses on developing an advanced system to reduce ammonia emissions from dual-fuel vessels.

Advancing Sustainable Marine Fuel

The project aims to enhance ammonia’s viability as a clean maritime fuel by addressing emission challenges. As a carbon-neutral fuel, ammonia produces no CO₂ emissions when combusted and can be synthesized using renewable energy. By developing a full-scale prototype, the project seeks to reduce ammonia emissions to below 25ppm, making it a more sustainable and safer fuel option for the shipping industry.

Collaboration Between Industry and Academia

This joint effort unites Eltronic FuelTech’s industrial expertise with Aarhus University’s academic research. By integrating lab-scale systems and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, the project will result in a scalable and practical solution for ammonia emission control. The test system will be implemented at Aarhus University’s facility in Foulum near Viborg.

Commitment to Innovation and Engineering Excellence

Leveraging insights from previous ammonia-based projects, Eltronic FuelTech’s R&D team will dedicate around 14,000 work hours across engineering disciplines, including process engineering, mechanical design, electrical and software development, risk management, and testing. The project will progress through lab-scale trials, simulations, and prototype development to ensure a robust and effective emission mitigation system.

Driving Green Maritime Operations

This collaboration marks a significant step toward reducing the environmental impact of maritime transport. By pioneering ammonia management solutions, Eltronic FuelTech and Aarhus University reaffirm their commitment to innovation and sustainability in the shipping industry.
