  • Energy Observer, the first hydrogen-powered zero-emission ship, returns to Paris after a seven-year global voyage, marking the end of a 68,000-nautical mile journey that began in 2017.
  • The project demonstrated the viability of renewable energy technologies in maritime navigation while raising public awareness through documentaries, exhibitions, and media coverage.
  • Energy Observer enters a new phase with plans for future technological innovations and educational initiatives, including a new vessel and digital platform.

Energy Observer, the world’s first zero-emission hydrogen-powered ship, docked at Port du Gros Caillou in Paris for an extraordinary stopover from September 13 to October 11, 2024. This marks the end of a seven-year journey that began in Paris in July 2017, reports Marine Insight.

A Visionary Project Led by Victorien Erussard

Launched by Victorien Erussard, a merchant navy officer and ocean racer, Energy Observer showcases the potential for renewable energy in the maritime industry.

The ship uses a mix of renewable energies, including hydrogen produced via seawater electrolysis, wind propulsion, and solar power.

Achievements Over the Past Seven Years

Since 2017, Energy Observer has sailed over 68,000 nautical miles, visited 50 countries, and made 101 stopovers.

The journey proved that sustainable technologies could function in diverse climates, engaging with scientists, industry experts, and policymakers worldwide.

Public and Partner Engagement

Throughout its journey, Energy Observer raised awareness through 13 documentary films and 500 videos broadcast on Canal+ and YouTube.

Over 350,000 visitors toured its exhibition village, while 20,000 industrialists and political leaders boarded the ship to explore sustainable solutions.

A Pioneering Collaboration with Bertrand Piccard

At a press conference in Paris, Energy Observer’s captain, Victorien Erussard, handed over the Solar Impulse magnetic compass to Bertrand Piccard, symbolizing the continuation of sustainable exploration.

Piccard will use the compass during his hydrogen-powered flight project, Climate Impulse.

New Initiatives and Future Projects

Energy Observer’s return to France marks the beginning of new ventures. It including the creation of a next-generation vessel, Energy Observer 3.

This vessel will experiment with synthetic fuels and cutting-edge technologies aimed at improving energy efficiency and decarbonization.

Educational Initiatives for a Sustainable Future

Energy Observer is expanding its educational efforts by launching two major projects: a digital platform, Energy Observer Weekly, focused on energy issues, and the Energy Observatory, a cultural hub for education on energy transitions.

Energy Observer has become more than just a ship. It represents a global movement towards clean energy and sustainable practices. It inspires future generations to explore and innovate for a greener planet.
