On Jan 31, by midnight a container ship “Elbsailor” suffered an engine blackout and ran into the embankment close to the ferry pt. Schacht-Audorf during the Eastbound transit of the Kiel Canal.  The Kiel canal was blocked briefly due to the incident.

The ship was enroute from Hamburg to St. Petersburg.  It blocked the canal as no other ships could pass in the narrow fairway at the accident site.  The tugs “Stein” and “Holtenau” were called from Kiel at 3 a.m.  Only at 6 a.m. they managed to pull the ship off.  It was pushed out of the way in the morning hours and secured at a pier in Klein-Königsförde.

The crew then attempted to fix the engine damage.  In the afternoon the ship reportedly resumed its voyage with a stern tug “Holtenau” and reached Kiel at 6.30 p.m.  She entered the waters of the Baltic Sea at 7.15 p.m.
