A general cargo ship was adrift in Sea after suffering failure in the main engine.
What happened?
A general cargo ship Ganit belonging to Russia suffered an engine failure and remained adrift in the Sea of Japan near Hokkaido Island. The ship was en route from Petropavlovsk to Kozmino when the incident occurred. The vessel consisted of 1040 tons of general cargo and several empty containers.
The general cargo vessel remains adrift at the moderate weather with east winds of 12-15 m/s and 1.5-meter waves.
There was no immediate danger for the seaworthiness of the vessel, but Master reported that engineers cannot repair the engine and requested assistance.
A salvage tug Neftegaz-55 was dispatched to the scene of the troubled freighter, which started towing of the ship to the port of Vladivostok.
Repairs to be undertaken:
The general cargo ship will be repaired at the port of Vladivostok, Russia and then inspected, before being returned to service.
No injuries or water pollution was reported when the accident occurred. Even though the troubled freighter contained 304 tons of heavy oil, 3.6 tons of diesel oil and 19 tons of fresh water, there were no reports of the oil spill.
