Engine-Room Blaze Caused by Thermal Oil Leak

232

On 17 January 2022, at approximately 1651 (UTC+1), a fire broke out in the engine room of the Maltese-registered motor vessel Neptune Thelisis as it was approaching Alexandria pilot station. The engine-room crew discovered the fire and initiated fire-fighting operations, reports MISU.

Fire-Fighting Response

The crew assembled at the designated muster station and worked to control and extinguish the fire. They successfully brought the fire under control by activating the fixed fire-fighting installation.

The investigation identified that the immediate cause of the fire was the failure of a pipe in the thermal oil system. The leaking thermal oil made contact with a hot surface on the boiler’s economizer, igniting the fire.

Safety Recommendations

The Marine Safety Investigation Unit (MSIU) issued one recommendation to the operating company to emphasize the importance of proper welding techniques to prevent similar incidents in the future.
