On Tuesday, the Canadian Coast Guard were called to assist a disabled cargo ship stranded about 32 nautical miles off the coast of Port aux Basques.

What happened?

The cargo ship named ‘Thorco Crown’, a 13-year-old vessel, registered to Antigua and Barbuda, was en route to Montreal from Argentia when it issued a mayday call which was raised due to a fire in the engine room.

The ship was passing through the Cabot Strait area at the time.

Ship disabled:

According to Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the fire was extinguished but the ship had become disabled due to the fire.

The coast guard said there was no immediate danger to the crew, vessel or environment. However, an environmental response team was on site monitoring the situation.

The vessel is also being monitored by the Canadian Coast Guard ship Sir William Alexander and the Joint Rescue Centre Halifax and the owners of the Thorco Crown have scheduled a tugboat to tow the cargo ship on Wednesday.

The MV Thorco Crown is a merchant cargo ship with a crew of 13 and is not currently carrying cargo, according to DFO.
