Engineers Evacuated, After Ship Catches Fire

On August 15, engineers working onboard a ship were evacuated after an electrical panel onboard the ship caught fire.

What happened?

The Engineers working on an unnamed ship at Cammell Laird’s in Birkenhead when the incident occurred.

The engineers were evacuated from the vessel as a precaution after an electrical panel caught fire on one of its decks.

Fire brought under control:

The fire crews were called to the site and the firefighter used a main branch and main jet to extinguish the fire.

A Cammell Laird spokesman said, “At approximately 4pm yesterday afternoon, an electrical panel on board a vessel under repair in the shipyard malfunctioned and overheated. As a result of this overheating, smoke was generated from the panel. The yard’s emergency procedures were immediately put into action which includes notifying the emergency services. An evacuation of the vessel took place and all shore-side services were isolated”.

He further added, “Working in conjunction with Merseyside Fire and Rescue, production was able to restart in less than two hours of the alarm being raised. We are grateful as always for the timely and professional response of Merseyside Fire and Rescue”.

No injuries reported:

Fortunately, during the fire none of the crew onboard were injured and the vessel sustained no damages during the fire incident.

The port officials have initiated investigation to determine the cause of the fire and the ship has been docked at the port for further inspection and repairs.
