Enhancing Offshore Safety In Qatar: Vissim to Deliver Centralized Vessel Monitoring System

11

Vissim, a Norwegian software developer, has been contracted by Bin Omran Trading & Telecommunications to provide a vessel monitoring solution for offshore operations in Qatar. This technology aims to enhance the safety and efficiency of Qatar’s offshore assets, according to Offshore Energy.

Centralized Vessel Monitoring

Vissim’s centralized vessel monitoring and alerting system (CVMAS) is set to enhance the protection of over 300 offshore assets in Qatar. The system is expected to become operational in the first half of 2025.

According to Vissim, the CVMAS is designed to improve offshore assets’ safety and security, optimize vessel logistics, and contribute to reducing CO2 emissions while increasing maritime situational awareness.

Benedicte Stiberg, Vissim’s regional director for the Middle East, emphasized that the software platform provides a comprehensive and user-friendly overview of vessel traffic across Qatar’s waters, including its coastline and offshore assets, ensuring enhanced maritime safety for all vessels and infrastructure in the region. The core of Vissim’s technology is a software platform that delivers real-time situational awareness of the geographical area, improving maritime safety, security, and efficiency.

Integrating Data Sources

Vissim’s CVMAS in Qatar integrates various data sources, including AIS and weather data, to provide a comprehensive maritime overview. The system is designed to be compatible with other maritime tools and platforms, such as personnel and logistics management systems and geographic mapping tools.

The system also enables the monitoring of helicopter traffic and personnel onboard offshore assets, further enhancing operational safety and efficiency.

Benedicte Stiberg highlighted that the system provides 24/7 surveillance, continuously monitoring maritime activities and utilizing an alarm mechanism to prioritize critical events. This enhances asset protection, improves maritime operations, and delivers a clear and actionable understanding of activities across Qatar’s waters.

The processed data is presented in a comprehensive format at QatarEnergy’s Joint Operations Centre in Doha. This collaborative initiative between oil and gas operators provides real-time situational awareness and enhances maritime coordination within Qatar’s waters.
