Jiangnan Shipyard has secured a significant contract to build six 150,000 cubic meter ultra-large ethane carriers (ULECs) for Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS). This marks the third newbuilding contract announced by the Chinese shipbuilder within a week, reports Seatrade Maritime.
World’s First 150,000 Cu Metre ULECs
The new ULECs represent a milestone for Jiangnan Shipyard, making it the first shipyard in the world to construct 150,000 cubic meter ULECs. These advanced vessels, independently developed and designed by Jiangnan, are set to be delivered in 2027.
“The signing of this order makes Jiangnan the world’s first shipyard to build 150,000 cu metre ultra large ethane carriers, further extending products pool of the company,” said Jiangnan Shipyard.
Advanced Design and Technology
The ULECs will feature the Mark III membrane containment system from GTT and will be classified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The vessels will be equipped to carry ethane, ethylene, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and will be LNG-ready. Additionally, the scrubber-fitted ships will include an SCR system and ethane-dual fuelled engines to optimize the economic efficiency of ethane as a fuel.
In 2023, EPS had also placed an order with Jiangnan for the construction of six ammonia-ready very large ammonia carriers (VLACs), further cementing the partnership between the two companies.
