ERMA FIRST Acquires Ecochlor, Strengthening Its Global Position

183

ERMA FIRST GROUP has successfully acquired Ecochlor, a major move that bolsters its role as a leading provider of Ballast Water Treatment Systems (BWTS) and decarbonisation solutions. This acquisition broadens ERMA FIRST’s offerings in BWTS, ensuring its capability to meet global environmental compliance standards and fulfil its commitment to sustainable shipping.

Expanding BWTS and Decarbonisation Solutions

The acquisition enhances ERMA FIRST’s portfolio with Ecochlor’s proprietary chlorine dioxide (ClO2)-based systems, designed to efficiently treat ballast water. Ecochlor offers two main BWTS solutions:

  • EcoOne™: A filterless system using ClO2, requiring minimal power.
  • Hybrid System: Operable in both two-step filtration with ClO2 or filterless mode based on shipowner needs.

Ecochlor’s solutions, particularly EcoBlue—the ClO2 component of the BWTS—have earned IMO and USCG Type Approval certifications, ensuring compliance with international standards. ERMA FIRST’s acquisition will allow Ecochlor’s products to reach a broader customer base with added support for chemical resupply and certified services worldwide, reinforcing operational consistency.

Commitment to Marine Sustainability

According to Eleni Polychronopoulou, President of ERMA FIRST GROUP:

“ERMA FIRST GROUP is dedicated to protecting and preserving the marine ecosystem by continuously developing and expanding its portfolio of innovative and future-proof environmental protection solutions.”

This acquisition aligns with ERMA FIRST’s 15-year dedication to high-quality BWTS services, now solidified by Ecochlor’s eco-efficient systems. Konstantinos Stampedakis, Co-Founder and Managing Director of ERMA FIRST emphasized that existing Ecochlor systems will remain certified for service as long as customers adhere to original maintenance requirements and use genuine EcoBlue and spare parts.

A Step Towards Green Shipping Operations

ERMA FIRST’s global reach, combined with Ecochlor’s BWTS technology, will support low-power, highly effective ballast water treatment solutions aimed at helping the shipping industry reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Mr. Stampedakis underscored that this acquisition positions ERMA FIRST GROUP as a comprehensive partner for green shipping operations, leveraging innovation to support environmental responsibility across the maritime sector.
