ESL Shipping’s first gas-fuelled bulk carrier – built to a Deltamarin design and the first ship to be built to DNV GL’s new rules – has been named at Jinling shipyard in Nanjing, China.
The 160m loa, 26,000dwt ship, named Viikki, is claimed to emit 50% less CO2 than vessels of the previous generation. She will start operating in the Baltic Sea during the first half of 2018 for Swedish-Finnish steel producer SSAB.
The main engine, a dual-fuel MAN B&W 5G45ME-C9.5-GI provides a shaftline power of 7.25MW, with auxiliary engines and boilers also burning LNG. All combustion engines will feature waste heat recovery. A permanent magnet shaft generator will provide power take out/in capability.

The project is part of the Bothnia Bulk project, funded partly by the EU. Its objective is to make the sea route between Luleå, Oxelösund and Raahe to be more eco-friendly. The vessels have been designed in Finland, with European equipment suppliers accounting for roughly 60% of all vessel systems.
The construction of a sister vessel is proceeding on schedule, with the naming planned for September.
