ESL Shipping has become the first company in the general cargo segment to receive approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its near- and long-term greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets. The approval confirms that ESL Shipping’s climate goals are aligned with the latest scientific guidance to limit global warming to 1.5°C, in line with the Paris Agreement.

Ambitious Targets for 2030 and 2040

The company has committed to reducing its well-to-wake GHG emissions by 59.6% per ton-nautical mile by 2030 equivalent to a 47.1% absolute reduction compared to its 2023 base year. Looking further ahead, ESL Shipping aims to achieve net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2040, including a 97.8% reduction in well-to-wake emissions.

In addition, ESL Shipping plans to discontinue the transport of fossil fuels such as energy coal by 2030 and to reduce emissions from the use-phase of transported fossil fuels by 100% by the same year.

Industry Leadership in Sustainable Shipping

“This milestone reflects our deep commitment to climate action and the transformation of maritime logistics. Through fleet renewal, operational efficiency, and the increased use of renewable fuels, we are not only reducing emissions but also setting a new standard for sustainable shipping. Our transition plan is ambitious, but we are determined to deliver on it,”

says Mikki Koskinen, Managing Director of ESL Shipping.

The company’s approved targets include both Scope 1 and 3 emissions, covering operational and value-chain emissions, as well as land-related impacts from bioenergy feedstocks.

A Clear Path Toward Net Zero

ESL Shipping’s transition plan focuses on fleet modernization, alternative fuels, and digitalized operations to enhance efficiency. The company’s long-term strategy reflects a comprehensive approach that combines environmental responsibility with business growth.

The approval by SBTi solidifies ESL Shipping’s role as a frontrunner in maritime decarbonization and provides a clear framework for progress toward its 2040 net-zero ambition.
