Wind-Propulsion Vessel

Germany’s shipping company ESTE Shipping has decided to add a wind propulsion system-equipped vessel to its fleet of mini bulkers, with delivery expected in 2025.

The company revealed it completed agreements to add M/V FS-ESTE to its fleet.

“This ship will be built in China using predominantly European licensed technology,” ESTE told Offshore Energy.

Steel cutting for this ship is planned for September 2024, with delivery anticipated by the end of 2025.

Efficiency and Sustainability Focus

“Representing a new benchmark in the mini bulker market, these ships prioritize efficiency and sustainability. M/V ESTE will undergo enhancements with wind-propelled systems, reinforcing our dedication to meeting our customers’ sustainability requirements,” the company said in a LinkedIn update.

The 5,200 dwt vessel will fly the flag of Madeira. With a gross tonnage of 3,850t, the bulker will feature a length of 89.98 meters and a width of 15.45 meters. The bulker belongs to the 5200 XL series designed by Dutch design and engineering company Groot Ship Design. The design combines an ultra-large cargo hold, ice class 1A, and efficient powering.

ESTE Shipping’s Fleet and Operations

Founded in 2007, ESTE has eleven vessels in its fleet, apart from the wind-powered newbuild. The majority of the company’s vessels fly the European flags and operate mainly on the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea routes.

“Given our typical routes, investing in wind propulsion is certainly worth considering due to its potential payback and the significant impact on emissions, which we estimate could be reduced by more than 20%,” ESTE Shipping explained.
