The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the European Commission (EC) announced Phase II of the Global Maritime Technology Cooperation Centres Network (GMN).
GMN Phase II
Phase II focuses on upscaling the work of five regional canters and emphasizes pilot demonstrations for quantifiable GHG emission reductions. Following a successful Phase I, which established MTCCs across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Pacific, Phase II aims to build on capacity and deliver larger-scale projects.
The €10 million Phase II project aims to enhance portside energy efficiency and retrofit smaller vessels, emphasizing public-private partnerships. Secretary-General Lim highlighted its impact on climate goals and thanked the EC for support. Ms. Fotini Ioannidou of the European Commission emphasized the project’s role in reducing maritime emissions, showcasing commitment to multilateral solutions for decarbonizing shipping.
Green Maritime
The Global Maritime Technology Cooperation Centres Network (GMN) Phase II, supported by the European Commission (EC), aims to advance the adoption of energy-efficient technologies within the maritime sector, promoting a more environmentally friendly shipping industry.
Its primary focus is to assist Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in meeting the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) targets for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Sustainable Solutions
Phase II of the GMN project emphasizes skill development and the deployment of innovative technologies in regions that face unique challenges in adopting sustainable shipping practices.
This collaboration enables Maritime Technology Cooperation Centres (MTCCs) to establish stronger connections with technology providers, facilitating the implementation of effective and tailored solutions to reduce emissions and enhance sustainability within the maritime industry.
