In the dynamic world of maritime operations, safety and environmental conservation have become paramount concerns. The innovative efforts of organizations like the Fundación Valenciaport, PSA Singapore, and Abu Dhabi Maritime in their quests to enhance safety, embrace technology, and promote ecological responsibility within the maritime industry.
- STBERNARD project improves first responders’ safety in chemical terminals with advanced CBRN threat technologies.
- PSA Singapore’s PM Telematics enhances maritime safety through technology-driven driver behavior monitoring.
- Abu Dhabi Maritime and Tadweer partner for environmental conservation in Abu Dhabi’s waterways, promoting sustainability in the maritime industry.
Contribution to Safer Chemical Terminals
The Fundación Valenciaport is at the forefront of improving safety in chemical terminals with its participation in the STBERNARD project. This initiative, which recently held its inaugural meeting in Valdemoro, Madrid, has a primary goal of enhancing the safety of first responders in situations involving chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats within port areas. With a budget of approximately €6.7 million ($7.17 million), co-financed by the Horizon Europe Programme, the project focuses on developing advanced technologies, including rapid sensors and decontamination methods, to address these threats effectively.
Mitigating Risks in Dangerous Goods Handling
STBERNARD recognizes the importance of preventing fire or explosion risks when handling dangerous goods in bulk. The project acknowledges the potential hazards in these operations and aims to enhance safety measures to protect both personnel and the environment.
AI-Powered Safety Solutions for First Responders
One significant aspect of the STBERNARD initiative is the development of a modular artificial intelligence tool. This tool will generate specific operating procedures for first responders dealing with CBRN threats in rescue and recovery operations. By minimizing the need for responders to enter contaminated areas and reducing exposure, these procedures and tools will significantly enhance the safety of emergency teams.
Technological Innovations in Maritime Safety
In August 2023, PSA Singapore garnered recognition for its Prime Mover (PM) Telematics program. This technology-driven initiative has played a pivotal role in improving safety and health by detecting unexpected changes in vehicle speed, angles of movement, and driver behavior. Such innovations are crucial for ensuring safety within port operations.
