Europe’s ambitious green hydrogen strategy for 2030 involves importing 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen to fuel traditionally coal, natural gas, and oil-reliant industries in heavy transport and industry sectors. The Port of Rotterdam is at the forefront, aiming to facilitate 40 million tonnes globally by 2050, with a substantial portion sourced from the Atlantic resource.
Exploration of Opportunities under the MOU
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Port of Rotterdam and Shannon Foynes Port paves the way for collaborative efforts in establishing a green hydrogen supply chain. The partnership explores opportunities to build coalitions with commercial parties, expand the MOU network, and achieve a joint supply chain process for delivering proof-of-concept volumes before 2030.
Collaborative Initiatives and Market Development
Under the MOU, both ports will engage relevant public stakeholders, share information on green hydrogen and its derivatives, and collaborate on market development. The focus extends to finding off-takers for supplies, including the maritime fuels sector, sustainable aviation fuels, green fertilizer, and industries with direct green hydrogen fuel requirements like steel production. The collaboration signifies a pivotal step toward transforming the ports into key supply chain corridors, contributing significantly to Europe’s green transition.
