  • Everllence successfully operated a 90-bore ME-LGIM engine on ethanol at all load points in Japan.
  • The achievement expands the company’s proven methanol-burning engine platform to include ethanol capability.
  • More than 225 ME-LGIM engines are already ordered, with over 50 in operation across vessel types.
  • Ethanol-ready engines and retrofit options strengthen shipowners’ pathways to IMO-defined net-zero targets.

Everllence has successfully demonstrated the operation of a 90-bore ME-LGIM engine running on ethanol at all load points in Japan. This milestone adds ethanol capability to its proven methanol-burning engine platform, reinforcing the company’s role in advancing alternative fuel solutions for the shipping industry. The announcement was shared in a recent update from Everllence.

Expanding Ethanol Capabilities in Two-Stroke Marine Engines

Everllence first introduced the ME-LGIM platform more than a decade ago, with the first commercial engine entering service in 2016 within the methanol carrier segment. Since then, the company has steadily expanded its portfolio, scaling the technology for vessels beyond methanol carriers in 2021. Today, the ME-LGIM stands as the best-selling methanol-burning engine across vessel types, with more than 225 units ordered for newbuilds and over 50 engines already in operation.

Building on this success, the company has now validated ethanol as a fuel option, giving shipowners an additional pathway toward decarbonization. Company executives highlighted that the successful trials provide a strong technical foundation for ethanol capability, with retrofit potential on existing ME-LGIM-equipped S90 engines. Everllence continues to strengthen its position as a leader in dual-fuel technologies, underlining the need for supporting legislation and market demand to make ethanol a viable commercial option for the maritime sector.
