The Sea-Intelligence report highlights the transformative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on port-pair connections in the Europe-North America East Coast (NAEC) trade, says an article published on a container news website.

Pre-Pandemic Stability (H1 2019)

In the first half of 2019, port-pair connections remained relatively stable, fluctuating within the range of 600-800 connections.

Pandemic Disruptions And Recovery

The North Europe-NAEC route experienced a significant drop in total port-pair connections during the initial pandemic phase. However, by 2023, it rebounded to pre-pandemic levels.

Conversely, the Mediterranean-NAEC route showed resilience, avoiding a similar decline. Post-pandemic, a noticeable shift favored Med-NAEC, surpassing the pre-pandemic baseline.

Distinct Connections Dynamics

Distinct connections, counted once regardless of the frequency, showcased distinct trends. Med-NAEC saw a 26% increase in 2023 compared to 2019, while North Europe-NAEC experienced an 18% increase during the same period.

Notable Changes In 2023

Positive Changes

  • Saint John: Gained 12 direct port-pair connections from Europe, having had no prior connections.

Negative Changes

  • New Orleans: Lost nine direct connections to Europe and gained none, effectively losing direct services originating in Europe.

The evolving port-pair connections reflect the dynamic impact of the pandemic, with some regions rebounding and others experiencing shifts in trade dynamics.
