Belgium-based shipping company EXMAR has announced the commencement of its third midsize gas carrier equipped with LPG dual-fuel engines, according to Offshore Energy. The steel cutting ceremony for the vessel was held on December 30, 2024, at the CIMC Sinopacific shipyard in China. Delivery is expected in the second quarter of 2026.

This newbuild is part of a series of four 41,000-cbm LPG dual-fuel midsize gas carriers recently acquired from Norway’s Avance Gas for $282.4 million. These vessels will enhance EXMAR’s fleet capabilities and align with the company’s strategy of maintaining a diverse and adaptable fleet to meet market demands.

Strategic Expansion of EXMAR’s Fleet

The addition of the four LPG dual-fuel midsize carriers underscores EXMAR’s commitment to sustainable growth and operational flexibility. By expanding its fleet, the company aims to attract new business opportunities and address the growing demand for cleaner and more efficient shipping solutions.

Launch of EXMAR LPG France

In a related development, EXMAR introduced a new entity, EXMAR LPG France, to manage and operate six midsize gas carriers currently under construction at South Korea’s HD Hyundai Mipo shipyard. This venture highlights EXMAR’s focus on innovation and its role in advancing dual-fuel technologies.

Pioneering Ammonia-Powered Shipping

The six-vessel series, including the industry’s first oceangoing ammonia-powered vessels, reflects EXMAR’s forward-thinking approach. While the initial two ships will feature LPG dual-fuel engines, the remaining four will run on ammonia. The keel for the first ammonia-powered carrier, with a capacity of 46,000 cbm, was laid in July 2024, with delivery planned for early 2025.

EXMAR’s investments in cutting-edge propulsion systems reaffirm its leadership in sustainable maritime solutions and its ability to adapt to future market and regulatory demands.
