On September 26, a ferry reportedly collided with a tanker carrying concrete material.

What happened?

The ferry ‘Gorinchem X’ was involved in a collision with a concrete tanker ‘Tarsis’ on the upper Merwede at Werkendam.

The captain of the vessel was sailing in between two vessels ‘Gorinchem’ and ‘Sleeuwijk’ when he lost control of the vessel and collided with the concrete tanker.

Two crew members injured:

Fortunately, there were no passengers onboard the vessel when the incident occurred. Only the two crew members present onboard the vessel were injured during the incident. The cause of the collision is attributed to dense fog prevalent in the region.

A rescue boat from KNRM ‘Tjepke Ekkelboom’ was dispatched to the site of the incident within 15 minutes and transported both the injured crew members to the shore at the Damen Shipyard where they were treated by ambulance staff.

Ferry suffers damages:

The ferry ‘Gorinchem X’ suffered damages to its bow, which was completely crushed during the incident. The cement tanker suffered less damage and berthed at Hansweert.
